Composite
materials are making strong headway in construction. Lightweight
substitutes for wood, concrete and steel spun off from the defense
industry, composites have been used in bridge decks and for wrapping
columns with carbon fiber to form a hard composite shell casing
-- a versatile alternative to steel casings on bridge retrofits.
Advances in technology make composites cost-effective for repair,
seismic retrofit, and upgrade of structurally deficient and aging
building structures. Composites can be applied to beams, panels,
slabs & walls, masonry, wooden structures, shear walls, and other
building elements.
